This work is an early interpretation of “The Witches’ Tree,” a motif that would later evolve into one of the distinctive themes of MAZZI FINE ART.
The work is inspired by a legendary monumental oak tree that truly exists in Tuscany, Italy, and has survived for centuries. According to local legend, witches once gathered among its immense branches to perform sacred dances and rituals, giving rise to the name L'Albero delle Streghe — The Witches’ Tree.
Having endured the forces of nature and the passage of countless years, the ancient oak continues to stand firmly rooted in the earth, extending its enormous branches toward the sky. Its extraordinary presence embodies the resilience of life and the mysterious energy of the natural world.
Against a deep night-blue background, the brilliance of gold creates a striking contrast, while light appears to fall across the scene like a magical rain. Butterflies and other small creatures move around the golden tree, and the contrast in scale between these delicate forms of life and the monumental oak further emphasizes the tree’s majesty, strength, and the sense of mystery surrounding it.
The work was created during an early period in Francesco Mazzi’s artistic development, while he was still researching and refining the techniques that would later become characteristic of his practice. Before developing his present technique of incorporating pure gold directly into his oil paints, Mazzi created the sculptural form of the tree using gold leaf and oil paint, revealing an expression unique to this formative period. The frame itself is also exceptional, featuring hand-carved detailing finished with multiple layers of gold leaf.
Through an ancient oak that has survived for centuries, L'Albero delle Streghe explores the strength and renewal of life, together with the enduring mystery of nature. Bringing these elements together within the image of a monumental golden tree, the work represents an important early expression of the artistic origins of “The Witches’ Tree.”
