In Tuscany, Italy, not far from Francesco Mazzi’s hometown, stands an immense ancient oak tree that has lived for more than 800 years.
“Albero della Strega — The Witch’s Tree.”
Over centuries, its enormous branches have spread outward, forming what appears almost like a natural stage. According to legend, witches once gathered beneath the tree and danced upon its great branches at night, giving rise to its name, The Witch’s Tree.
Through more than eight centuries, the ancient oak has endured countless hardships and changing times, yet it continues to stand with extraordinary strength—as though the witches who once gathered there have watched over and protected the tree across the centuries.
Throughout history, witches have also been associated with a profound knowledge of plants, herbs, fragrances, the changing seasons, and the hidden powers of nature.
Keepers of nature’s wisdom, connecting the human world with the natural world.
This legendary oak is also said to have been one of the inspirations for the great oak tree that appears in The Adventures of Pinocchio by Tuscan author Carlo Collodi.
Francesco Mazzi himself visited this extraordinary place, experiencing both the immense vitality of a tree that has survived for more than 800 years and the mysterious atmosphere surrounding it.
“ALBERO DELLA STREGA” was born from that experience.
The composition is immersed in the depth of MAZZI BLUE.
Layers of blue gradation evoke the mysterious presence surrounding the Witch’s Tree and the invisible energy that seems to emanate from it.
Emerging from this profound blue is a tree illuminated in pure gold.
Its ancient trunk and branches are sculpturally constructed through multiple layers of shallow relief, upon which further layers of color and pure gold are applied. As light touches the surface, the gold and blue respond to one another, continuously changing the expression of the work.
Around the tree, colorful butterflies appear to dance, as though drawn toward its mysterious energy.
The butterfly is a symbol of transformation into beauty and renewal.
Within the work, the butterflies gently touch the mystery that lies within those who encounter the tree, awakening a new inner light.
The Witch has been an important theme within MAZZI FINE ART since its earliest years.
Through works such as “The Witch’s Tree” and “The Witch’s Garden,” the Witch Series explores the relationship between nature’s ancient wisdom, humanity, and the unseen world, forming a distinctive part of the artistic universe of MAZZI FINE ART.
Among these works, “The Witch’s Tree” has remained one of the symbolic motifs that has captivated collectors and admirers since the early years of MAZZI FINE ART.
And now, after the passage of time, it has been brought to life once again:
“ALBERO DELLA STREGA — The Witch’s Tree.”
A life that has endured for more than 800 years.
Ancient wisdom connecting humanity and nature.
The mystery of blue and the radiance of pure gold.
And butterflies guided toward the light.
A work that expresses the timeless power of nature, the strength to endure adversity, and the transformation toward a new light and beauty.
